NASA has been in the strategy and planning stages of the Digital Transformation Initiative since late 2017. The overall goal of the Initiative is to enhance mission success by engaging digital culture and technologies to modernize our workplace, workforce, and work products. This hackathon is part of NASA's initial DT implementation plan.

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon. The hackathon engages thousands of citizens across the globe to use open data from NASA and partner space agencies to build innovative solutions to the real-world challenges we face on Earth and in space. NASA, CSA, CNES, ESA, and JAXA thank the over 26,000 participants from nearly 150 countries that joined us to “Take Action” from home on October 2-4, 2020 as part of an entirely virtual celebration of our 9th annual hackathon!
